Can I Do A Balance Transfer From Someone Else’s Credit Card?

Over recent months, we have seen a large number of UK credit card customers looking for answers to questions about a balance transfer from someone else’s credit card.

In most cases, when making a balance transfer, you will transfer the outstanding balance from a credit card in your own name, to a new credit card, that is also in your name.

However, what if you would like to transfer the outstanding balance from someone else’s credit card? This balance transfer could be from your wife, your husband, spouse or partner, to a credit card in your name.

Common questions we have seen on this topic recently have included all of the following:-

  • Can you balance transfer someone else’s credit card?
  • Which credit card providers let you transfer a balance to or from a partner?
  • Can you pay off someone else’s credit card with a balance transfer?
  • Can I transfer my husband’s credit card balance to mine?
  • Can I balance transfer someone else’s card?
  • Can I balance transfer my partners credit card?
  • Can I transfer my wife’s credit card balance to mine?
  • Can I transfer someone else’s credit card balance to mine?

Often, when two people are in a relationship, one individual may have a better credit history, or a higher annual salary. As a result, that person maybe more likely to be approved for a new 0% balance transfer credit card. However, it could be their husband, wife or partner that has the outstanding debt, on a credit card in their name.

Can you balance transfer someone else’s credit card? Is this type of balance transfer possible? And if so, how do you make this type of balance transfer in the UK, in 2024?

Can I Balance Transfer Someone Else’s Card?

Balance Transfer From Someone Else's Credit Card

In some cases, the banks and card companies, will allow you to complete a balance transfer from someone else’s card. This can be to a new credit card that you are applying for, or to a card that you have just taken out.

Only some of the UK credit card companies will allow this type of balance transfer. HSBC, including M&S Bank, for example do allow these types of transfer. However, MBNA, Halifax and Lloyds do not. You will also not be allowed to make a transfer between cards issued by the same company.

The process when making a balance transfer from someone else’s card, is the same as when carrying out any other balance transfer.

You simply need to supply the correct balance transfer information. This includes the name of the credit card, the credit card number and the amount of the balance transfer you would like to make.

When you apply for a new credit card and balance transfer online, many balance transfer request forms do not ask for the name of the cardholder. They generally, just ask for the credit card number from which you would like to transfer the balance from.

However, you maybe more likely to be asked for the name of cardholder, if you apply for a new UK balance transfer credit card on the telephone.

All of the following UK featured balance transfer credit cards will allow an online balance transfer from someone else’s credit card.

Can You Balance Transfer Someone Else’s Credit Card To Mine

Well, as we explain above, yes you can.

However, before you jump straight in and make this type of balance transfer, there is one important issue to consider. When making a balance from someone else’s credit card to your own, you do need to be aware of this issue.

Once the balance is transferred to a credit card in your name, then you assume all of the liability for the debt.

In other words the credit card company will now hold you fully responsible for the outstanding amount. As a result, you are now also responsible for all repayments of the outstanding balance. It will be your credit rating at risk, in the event of any non-payment.

This is a very important factor to consider. This is especially true given the recent Coronavirus pandemic and current cost of living crisis. This may lead to uncertainty around job security and paying bills, for many people.

You can make balance transfers from Visa to Mastercard, and also from Mastercard to Visa branded credit cards.

So, in summary, yes you can transfer a balance from someone else’s credit card. This is provided that you understand and are comfortable with the transfer of the debt liability to yourself. Legally, your partner, your wife, or your husband is no longer liable for the repayments after the transfer, but you are.
