Partial Balance Transfer. Can You Transfer Part Of A Balance?

Can you do a partial balance transfer? Can you transfer part of a credit card balance?

These are questions that here at Balance Transfer Expert, we quite often see UK credit card customers looking for answers on.

A partial balance transfer can be defined as when a customer makes a balance transfer of only part of the outstanding credit card balance on their existing credit card across to a new 0% balance transfer credit card.

In the case of a partial balance transfer only some of the outstanding debt is transferred to the new credit card, and some debt remains on the old card.

A partial balance transfer differs from a full balance transfer where all of the outstanding balance is transferred from the old card to the new credit card.

In most cases a balance transfer is done from a credit card with a higher rate of interest to a new credit card offering a low or 0% rate of interest for an introductory period.

This balance transfer allows the customer to save money by paying less in interest for the promotional period, with more of the repayments going to reduce the outstanding debt.

Partial Balance Transfer

As an example of when you would transfer part of a credit card balance:-

  • If you have a £5,000 outstanding balance on an old credit card
  • You are given a £3,000 credit limit on a new credit card, with a 95% balance transfer limit
  • The result is that a part balance transfer of £2,850 is the maximum you will be allowed to transfer

A balance transfer does count as a payment so there is no reason why you should not make a partial balance transfer. Any balance transfer, even if you just transfer part of a credit card balance, is likely to reduce the amount you pay in interest.
